TEOTWAWKI…say what?

If you’re new to the prepping game, you’ve probably come across this term and wondered WTW it mean, right? It’s kind of a calling card for preppers that applies no matter what brings about the apocalypse. That’s right. It doesn’t matter if it’s zombies, aliens, or a President that the women are marching against. It means…

The End of the World as We Know It

If you’re from my age bracket you’re most familiar with this term from the REM song by the same name.

In addition to that little nugget o’ information, here’s some updates for you…

I’m finally getting into HAM radios as an integral part of my end of the world communications. Took the test and now waiting on my numbers from the FCC. I’ll let everyone know once I’m up and on the air (at least legally now).

Shawn Clay, the author of When the Zombie Apocalypse Comes, You’re Toast, and I are collaborating on some new projects. It’s gonna be fun! I’ll tell you more as we launch them.

This app is pitched for remodelers, but could be pretty useful for any of you looking at using the sun more effectively…

My buddy Seth Weller at P5 Preparedness said something the other day in class that really hit the mark that I wanted to pass on…

“The have nots always want what the haves have.”

And I saved the best for last. This is purely for fun, as it may not mean much for your preps, but, behold…The Camouflage Encyclopedia.

“I am an unyielding apocalypse.”

Here’s your semi-regular update of scary and exciting things…

A little something from an awesome comic called East of West by Jonathan Hickman…

I thought this was pretty cool. Dallas TX is rolling out public access trauma kits, much like the AEDs you see everywhere in public places. It’ll be interesting to see them in use. HERE is the article. You should be carrying your own IFAK, but it helps to know where these are if you see them.

In case you forgot since the last ebola epidemic, we’re not really that safe in our nation of ‘modern’ hospitals.

The United States is covered in a map of landfills. Even though most people prefer not to know where their trash goes, knowing where these are could provide innumerable resources after an apocalypse. People are wasteful these days and throw away thing that will be treasures after a bad event. HERE is a neat graphic to provide you a little more in on what’s in landfills.

Here’s a potential post-apocalypse bicycle for you…

After my last post mentioning books by Shawn Clay (Twitter @georgiazombies), he told me that several great things are in the works. His books will be available in the gift shop in the Woodbury Shoppe in Senoia GA. If you’re not familiar, a big part of the Walking Dead is filmed in this area. Expect big things from this guy!

The End is Nigh…or Is It?

Welcome to a semi-regular compilation of prepper, survivalist, and apocalypse information.

How many of you have bought tactical pens? I’ve tried out a few, with some better than others. The latest I tried was from 5.11, and I wasn’t very pleased with it. As a weapon, it succeeds well, but as a pen it sucks. The barrel slide mechanisms don’t work well. The barrel tears on the fingers if you write for more than five seconds. You can do way better than this. On a good note, it passed through multiple airport checkpoints in my briefcase without ever being taken away.

For me, I’ll be going back to my Fisher Space Pen and use a real knife or a regular pen for my tactical needs.

Bought me a new inside the pants (ITP) holster for my Glock. Haven’t used it yet, so I’ll let you know if I like it or not in a future post. I tried to get in touch with the maker, but he never bothered to respond to any communications by e-mail or phone. Even if I like, I’m not sure I’ll pass on the company name. I hate to help companies with poor customer service skills. These are hand-made by a firefighter in Horry County SC. He makes a great product, but I’m not so sure how long his business will last.

What’s your favorite ITP holster?

With sea levels changing, how long are we going to keep spending tax money to shore up vacation rentals and beach mansions for the rich? Check out this blog to see the flipside when we abandon poor people whose homes fall into the sea.

If you buy some, you may as well buy an industrial size bottle of THIS too.

Kid, You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out with that Flare!

I hope you’re all doing well in what we might call a pre-apocalypse economy with heavy indicators toward instability in the near future.

I signed up for a membership for the Cairn subscription boxes. Every month I get a box of goodies related to the outdoors. For a lot of people, the items are great for outdoor recreation. If you’re like me, many of them also do double duty for prepping. So far, I’ve gotten lights, long term storage snacks, off grid power sources, and even water filters.

I’ve been getting them for three months and haven’t been disappointed by a single one. If you sign up, be sure to use my e-mail address, docbeaker@aol.com, as a referral.

Orion Flares– This is a resource for you on flares and signaling devices. There are a lot of companies out there, but I always used Orion on our water rescue teams, so I’m kind of partial to them. The website has some good info, and you can even buy these on Amazon.

Just be careful. Flares are so simple that newbies like to play with them. I’ve seen people seriously burned with mishandling. They can also get a little volatile if kept unused too long. I had an old one explore in my hand once.

Minimalism- I’m a huge proponent of the minimalist philosophy. The thing about minimalism is that it looks different for everyone. I have a tribe of kids, so my version will look way different than that of a single guy. The point is that we all have too much stuff, emphasize stuff over experiences, and fall into the trap of consumerism.

How does this affect preppers? Do you know anyone who has plenty of stuff and gear but can’t start a fire without a lighter or a flamethrower?  Do you know someone that has a storage house full of preps but will likely die from diabetes or a task induced heart attack the minute he tries to cut firewood?

Joshua Becker is the main guy for practical, non-extremist minimalism. You can find out all about him HERE or check out his book on it HERE.

Canning Applesauce– I’m big on teaching homesteading as part of our homeschool. As such, Layers of Learning is a group I use for resources, not just on that, but other subjects as well. This post on canning would be a great one for your little preppers. Just remember, survival isn’t just about what the adults know. Include your kids in the process as well. Make them active members and not just passive participants.

Ongoing projects- My team is working on a series of reference guides focused on several very popular prepper fiction book series’. Expect the first two to be released next year! I’ll give you more information as it progresses.

April Fool’s Day Apocalypse

Tomorrow is April Fool’s Day, so I thought I’d do a themed post for that lovely holiday that always catches me by surprise.

Luke 20:16- 21- And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: 17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? 18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. 20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? 21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

So, what I am trying to tell you from that Bible verse is that a fool is one that does not prepare for the right things.

We all know there are different levels of doomsday preparedness from the freaks to the inept, but what I would like to at least see you ready for are the normal disasters you might face. I doubt that any of us live in an area that is completely free of natural disasters, be it hurricanes, tsunamis, tornados, or anything else. Manmade disasters? Well, if you live anywhere near a business, highway, railroad track, or people, you’re susceptible to that too.

Here are a few items I recommend to move you toward basic preparedness…

Doomsday Preppers season 1– This show mostly profiles the crazy folk, so it’s a good place to see the fringe element and then find your happy medium that works for you. You can learn a lot from watching these folks.

untitled

SOS Rations Emergency Food Bar– These things usually taste like crap, but it’s a good idea to have some food stored away that is portable, compact, and has a decent shelf life. In a disaster situation, taste isn’t important.

MSR Miniworks EX Microfilter– You can do without a lot of things for a while, but water is not one of them. Drink bad water, and you’ll only make things worse. Think you’d never be without water in the US, just ask folks from last year’s chemical spill in Charleston WV. The citizens of a modern state capitol could not drink water from their taps for some time.

1

Be Ready When the Sh*t Goes Down by Forrest Griffin– If you’re going to read about being ready, you might as well have fun when you do it. This prepping book by a professional UFC fighter is simple, straight to the point, and hilariously funny.

Gerber Bear Grylls Fire Starter– Fire just might make the difference for you. Not only can you cook, boil water, and create heat, but sitting around a nice outdoor fire also creates a wonderful sense of comfort and community.

gb

There you go. For under a couple hundred dollars, you have a head start on the 99% once something bad happens.
