Dr. Redbeard’s Prepping Guides is Now Open for Business

I wanted to let everyone know that I finally opened my prepper library online. For years I’ve collected resources for my own preps, like many of you. People have been asking for advice or the resources themselves for quite a while, so I finally found a way to share them with you.

Be sure to check it out at Dr. Redbeard’s Prepping Guides.

All the guides and resources are on there individually, but I’ve also created a highly affordable membership option that’s much cheaper if you want a bunch of them.

If you have any questions, let me know. As I release new editions, I’ll also make them available on Amazon as Kindle and print versions. That way, if the grid goes down, it’d be great to have a print copy.

One of the first ones I’m releasing is an old US Army handbook for butchering lamb. What’s for dinner in the apocalypse? Well, I’d say lamb makes an excellent addition to your Mountain House pouches.

Prepping for the End…Pop Culture Edition

I don’t know how many of you play any of the iterations of Call of Duty, but I thought you might find this interesting. Here are a couple of the signs from the smart home in Nuke Town.

Take those signs as a cautionary tale when you invest in your house. You can have all the cool bells and whistles in the world, but those things may not stop a bunch of gun-toting maniacs from trampling all over.

Check out the comic book pages below. Is this what it will be like for you? You’ll be the only one left standing among the people you know now.

The Election is Over, and the World Didn’t End

It doesn’t matter who you voted for, because both sides said the world would end if their candidate didn’t win. It didn’t. I still notice, though, that a certain side is protesting a fair election. Tsk, tsk.

Big news…James Wesley Rawles mentioned my book on his blog yesterday!

rawles-blog-post-mention-nov-15-2016

This is big for me. I wasn’t sure what he would think about it, and I must say that I am extremely pleased he spoke well of it. I never consulted him before writing it because I wanted to write my commentary completely impartial. Check out my book if you’re a fan of Rawles and his series that began with Patriots. Rawles is also the founder of Survivalblog.com.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000026_00011]

While we’re talking books, I wanted to mention a new friend before I wrap up. I happened to meet a guy on Twitter, and we hit it off.. We connected over talk on the usual, i.e. zombies and the apocalypse.  We’re both like-minded preppers who aren’t nut jobs but just want to make sure our families are safe no matter what. I’m sure you know what I mean. Finding other preppers you can get along with is a lot like dating, except both sides are well-armed. He’s an author who actually lives not far from me, so you can plan on seeing some joint projects soon, including a possible video series for Youtube.

You can find Shawn Clay at @georgiazombies on Twitter. Here’s the reviews I just posted on Amazon for two of his books…

Will You Be Ready? The Family Man’s Guide to Basic Preparedness by Shawn Clay

As a purveyor of anything apocalypse related, I really enjoyed Shawn Clay’s book on family preparedness. Most preparedness guides simply relay information. Sure, it’s good information, but it’s often given in a vacuum without considering the aspects of family. In other words, there are a lot of men out there who are really prepared for the end of the world in everything from training to stockpiles to gear, but have wives and kids who just aren’t interested. Getting the whole family involved is difficult.

I enjoy how the author approaches the subject from the point-of-view of both practicality and family and then moves forward to provide solid information on many different aspects of prepping. The book is long enough to give you a firm foundation in prepping but not so exhaustive that it is overwhelming.

I highly recommend it. As a matter of fact, now that I’m finished with this book I’m moving onto another one by him.

When The Zombie Apocalypse Comes, You’re Toast…(A practical guide on how not to become “that guy” when everything goes south) by Shawn Clay

I really enjoyed the author’s other more serious book on preparedness, so I wanted to check this one out. Besides being a serious prepper, I’m also a huge zombie junkie. This book did not disappoint me at all.

If you enjoyed the primary tome on zombie survival Max Brooks’ Zombie Survival Guide, then you’ll love this one as well. It’s hilarious, but chock full of useful information as well. In the same way that Zombieland gave us useful rules for staying alive (Rule #1- Cardio), this book does the same. For example, no high heels ladies (or guys too if you roll that way).

The author is simply hilarious. I would love to see this book turned into a faux documentary at some point. If you want to learn some basic tips about staying alive in the apocalypse and learn about zombies at the same time, you can’t go wrong with this one.

Be sure to check him out. As a writer myself, I know how important it is to help support fellow authors, whether it’s the big guys like Rawles and A. American or the smaller ones like me and Clay.

If You Only have Time for This Before the World Ends…

What would you do if you only had a certain amount of time left before the apocalypse? That’s the topic of a new book my publisher has asked me to write. It deals with the idea of what you could do to prepare for the end in only one year. Keep your eyes peeled for it. If you’d like to appear in the book as a case study anonymous or public, get in touch.

Here’s an image to display where you’ll be in life if you don’t prep in time…Uh Oh.

Until the book comes out, here’s some ideas and resources for you…

Amazon Prepper store– I started a custom Amazon store with lists of resources that I use or recommend for my preps. Be sure to check it out. If you think I’m missing anything, let me know.

Ever wonder about zombies and digestion? You’re not the only one.

Zombie-digestion

Lems packable shoes– I saw these foldable shoes featured on the Huckberry site a while back. I haven’t tried these out, but if they’re durable and pack this easy, they might make a great back-up pair of shoes for a bug-out bag.

Hurt Feelings– Here’s an interesting article on the real reason we need to stop protecting everyone’s feelings.

If you ever wanted to get really nerdy about your preps and get a degree in it, the University of South Carolina has a Hazards and Vulnerability Institute. Could you imagine getting paid to do all that crazy prepper stuff you do now?

USC Hazards Vulnerability Ad001

Baltimore and a Vampire Apocalypse– If you like reading not just realistic but also fanciful apocalyptic fiction, you might like the Baltimore stories by Mike Mignola, the creator of Hellboy. There are already quite a few graphic novels in this collection, so there’s plenty there to read for a while.

Someone sent me this the other day, and I’m not sure who to credit for its creation, but I the idea of a post-apocalypse Charlie Brown and Snoopy was too much to pass up.

Post Apoc Charlie Brown

The Division by Tom Clancy– Not sure if you guys play video games for fun or play them and call it tactical training, but this trailer for The Division presents a pretty cool apocalyptic event.

Thriving in the Apocalypse is Possible

Thriving, not just surviving, in the apocalypse is possible. To up your chances of moving into that minority of people, keep checking in with the blog. Most of what you’ll see here is of the optimistic nature, even though the world might be going to crap around you.

Don’t believe me? Then read on dear friends…

I’ve been paying close attention to A. American’s Facebook page, anxiously awaiting the release of his next book, Avenging Home. It’s out on Amazon, but I’m waiting to buy it from my hometown prepper store P5 Preparedness. That way I can support him and the local business owners who I count among my friends.

If you’ve not read any of the Going Home series, I’d consider a necessary part of the education for preppers. The books are chock full of real world possibilities and life-saving skills spun into a well-crafted story about a group of people doing more than just surviving.

I’m field-testing a new cut-resistant t-shirt, and I’ll give you more info with videos later, but for now, here’s a pair of cut-resistant gloves. These should keep your digits safe in the time after whether you’re knife fighting with bad guys, fending off zombies, or just clearing trees and brush. Check out the D-ROC Lightweight NitriX Palm Coated Work Gloves. Yeah, they’re pretty expensive, but how much is a finger worth to you?

If you’d like to eat more than just Mountain House after everything falls apart, HERE is a neat fact sheet on tools for canning that can help get you started.

Last but not least, if you’re at all concerned about flooding, HERE is an amphibious house that floats. I’m on the Biblical side of things regarding worldwide flood events, but what if your retreat or home is on the downside of a dam or reservoir? Might want to check it out. As a bonus, the houses are actually pretty nice.

“If you can dodge a wrench…”

Brownie points for anyone who can tell me where the quote in my title came from. I’ll let you hash that out in the comments and the Facebook page, but the premise is that if you can do this one hard thing, you can do another similar thing that’s easier.

It’s a premise that’s used in many ways and for various things. In sports it would equal training much harder than the actual event requires. In the military, it’s the old adage that the more you sweat in the training, the less you bleed in war. In the apocalypse it’s a mix of all those. Train hard now. Prepare amply now. Seek opportunities now. Don’t wait until the apocalypse and let that be the hardest thing you’ve ever done.

Alright, lecture done. Now it’s time to hand out a few resources and websites for you.

PPSS Cut, Slash, and Bite Resistant Clothing available from BodyArmorUSA.com has just released a slash resistant combat shirt. This is being marketed among public safety folks. I saw it on an EMS newsletter that I receive. I haven’t had the chance to check one out personally or inspect the testing data, but the verbiage sounds pretty cool. What I’m really curious about is how thick and heavy it is and how it feels to wear. The long sleeve version looks aesthetically pleasing and much more low key than wearing a Condor combat shirt out in public. Based on the photos, this one looks a lot like something someone would wear hiking or doing outdoorsy stuff. There’s even a solid colored short sleeve version.

PPSS-Slash-Resistant-UBAC-Shirt-high-res

Aside from post-apocalyptic wear when you’ll likely have it on all the time, I can see useful applications for it right now.

I just finished devouring A. American’s Survivalist book series based on a recommendation by Seth at P5 Preparedness in Chattanooga TN. To save some money I could devote to preps, I checked the public library to see if they had them. Here’s the answer I got in return…

Thank you for your request. Unfortunately, none of this author’s books have been made available to our library vendors, and we are unable to fulfill your order. Thank you for your patience.

I don’t know about you, but I gotta wonder if there’s something ulterior going on here.

Lastly for today, here’s a Dummies Guide cheat sheet for canning and preserving.

What Are You Learning to Make You Harder to Kill?

A stage of life for my family has us living in an apartment for a while. After being in a home for many years, it’s quite a change. It was a strategic move that we made for several reasons. Because of this new locale, our new family study topic is Urban Homesteading. It’s easy to homestead if you own some land in the country, but trying to do it in a city while based out of an apartment is an exercise in flexibility.

And we’re enjoying every bit of it!

The book we’ve been reading lately is The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Urban Homesteading. It’s actually a really good book, especially for beginners.

What about you? What’s your current topic of choice that you’re devoting learning time to? If you say, “Nothing”, then you’re wrong. You better find something new to learn or some skill to get better at. Rust isn’t very becoming.

Alright. Soapbox aside. Here’s your updates…

Ever considering fermenting as something you’d like to try. HERE is a fermenting cheat sheet for you.

Sure, your underground bunker or stuffy warehouse is really cool, but what if you could grow fresh air in there? HERE is a neat TED Talk on just that.

HERE is a neat article on America’s failing infrastructure and what future plans are. If you think roads are bad now, wait until the apocalypse.

If your ideal view of post-apocalypse living involves living in off-grid Ewok houses, I found a developer for you. Check it out HERE.

September is Almost Over and No Apocalypse So Far

All my friends in the know kept telling me that the world would end in September of this year. We’re 22 days in and it hasn’t happened yet, but it is still a possibility. Even so, if it’s an economic collapse, it could start in September with the full ramifications not felt for a while.

In the meantime, let’s talk about some other stuff, like how we can prepare for adverse conditions, no matter what causes them or when they occur.

500px-Crystal_Mill,_Colorado

Cabins, the New American Dream. I found this article interesting. We all love cabins for their usefulness and simplicity in rugged environments, but apparently the hipsters are now seeing them as the new American Dream. Imagine that. Cabins are cool again.

How to Prepare Canned Tomatoes– I always recommend Dummies Guides as the go to source for learning about pretty much anything. They also have a pretty robust website that has a lot of info also. Click on that other link to check out the article on their site. If you want a paper copy for when the grid goes down, click here for the Canning and Preserving for Dummies hard copy.

Five Questions to Ask When Choosing Solar Panels– This article comes from Builder magazine and is meant for non-apocalypse situations, although the questions do apply. I almost laughed when I got to the one about aesthetics. I know that in the apocalypse many of you will simply revert to trailer trash looking homes with fewer people and no HOAs to bother you. But here’s the thing, think tactically above all. Many of you will be creating tactical and sanitation nightmares with junked cars, old appliances, and piles of garbage in your perimeter.

This week’s question…how would you label your prepper philosophy? Here’s a few choices, but feel free to add your own. Homesteader, Rugged and Self-Sufficient, Tactical/Military, Tinfoil Hat, etc.

Post-Apocalyptic Babes- Fact or Fiction?

I watch a lot of post-apocalyptic movies. I’d say it’s my favorite genre. One of the problems I have with them, though, is that the women are always so hot. Or, put it this way, there are always hot women around. It’s great to look at, but is it very realistic?

I mean, sure, in a group of any size there is sure to be a certain percentage of hot women. But will what we consider to be hot exist in any way once the Big Bad happens?

Make up?

Shaving legs, underarms, and other not so accessible places?

Nice clothes?

Skinny?

It’s all going to change. You guys prep everything you can, but have you prepared your psyche for the awful truth that those hot women in the post-apocalyptic movies, shows, and comic books simply will not be there?

Here are a few examples of what you can plan on NOT seeing…

Updates on the Impending End Time- Ebola, Comic Books, and a Coming Winter

You should know by now from my previous posts that I’m an equal opportunity apocalypse kind of guy. I don’t believe it will come from one solitary source, but, rather, from a conflagration of events that all happen in a similar time period. With that said, I’d like to offer you an update on various potentialities that may occur.

I love to draw inspiration for potential events from fiction. I’m also a big comic book geek. Here’s a few comic books you may enjoy for a graphical representation of the apocalypse.

ONI Press has a title called The Bunker that deals with choices we make that influence events. Check out the Amazon page for a good description. It sounds like a good title, but I couldn’t secure a review copy to check it out for you.

I was really glad to see Chuck Dixon’s revival of Winterworld pop up at IDW. I’ve always been a fan of Dixon’s work from my wee childhood. His series deals with a post-apocalyptic world experiencing an eternal winter. For you Game of Thrones fans, winter isn’t coming. It’s already here. I am reading this series, and I love it! The previous version is out in trade paperback, single issues of the new series are available, and the trade of the current one is available for pre-order. You simply have to love the idea of a pet badger.

winterworld-apocalypse-nuclear

I picked up the first issue of Aspen’s Lola series just to check it out. It was kind of ho-hum. Future issues might show a unique spin on a post-disaster US, but the first issue just reminded me of everything that’s already been done and overdone. The covers for the series are great if you like badass apocalyptic chicks, but the character just doesn’t match the view.

I am a huge fan of Matt Hawkins’ comic books. He’s a main guru over at Top Cow, so I’d recommend picking up any of his works. Two of my favorites for apocalypse-related themes are Aphrodite IX, which takes place in the far future and also Wildfire. Although Wildfire hasn’t gone total big bad end of time yet, it might. It centers around the genetically modified food issue, which is one that is high on my list of potential causes for the end of days. One of the best aspects of his books is that although the book might be fiction, he presents a science class section at the end that explains the real science behind the story.

Wildfire-GMO

Ever wondered how dangerous a storm surge might be to various areas of the United States? Click HERE and wonder no more. I live in the coastal southeast US, no more than a mile from the ocean, so I know that a large enough storm will put my house underwater.

Your distance from trouble might be the only thing that saves you during a bad event. Check out this ARTICLE from Suarez International.

HERE is a link to CSPAN hearings on the ebola crisis. You know you love watching self-effacing politicians talk on CSPAN. Even so, despite the politicians, there’s a great deal of good information that is presented in the testimonies.

A little truth-telling about the ebola crisis occurs in this article from Wired magazine. We need more truth and less of the lies telling us not to worry.
