Costco is Your Friend in the Apocalypse

There are a lot of things to be said about Costco stores. I shop there quite a bit, not just for the basics like food and fuel, but for books and other items as well.

In the apocalypse, because of the vast stores of staples like food and diapers in a Costco store and also because the stores are relatively secure compared to other store buildings, it will be a popular place. You can count on a lot of fights there as people try to secure supplies, at least until an armed force seizes control of the store and the goodies.

That’s after the big bad though.

What about before the apocalypse, as all of us prep and get ready?

Costco is actually a pretty good resource for stored and emergency food supplies. Below is an ad from a recent sales catalog. I have no idea how it tastes. I’d love to get hold of some of this and try it out. If I do, I’ll write a review for it.

Here’s a misc. pack of apocalyptic links and info for you.

I’m currently reading Countdown by Alan Weisman. I can attest like one of the comments in the ratings pic that it is utterly frightening. If you want exposure to an apocalyptic event with real-life potential, then check out this book.

Netflix has some really good apocalyptic movies in their Instant Play list, both fiction and non-fiction. I just finished watching the Discovery documentary Apocalypse How that was really good. Although I don’t agree with all the information presented, it’s a very good primer of the variety of causes for an apocalyptic event. Highlights include commentary by Neil Degrasse Tyson and a comparison between future disaster response and past ones. in other words, if you look at how well prepared we are as a people for pre- or post-disaster operations, if something big hits, most everyone will surely die.

Two of my fave quotes from the show are…

“Black holes are the universe’s cosmic carnivores.”

In reference to solar flares…”the solar equivalent of ‘roid rage.”

Feel free to tweet those.

Ebola is still a viable instrument in a pending apocalypse- Ebola Outbreak Grows With More Deaths in Liberia

Last night I watched a movie called After the Dark on Netflix. It dealt with a group of prep school students ruminating on who in a small group would survive a massive radiological event. It was actually a pretty good movie. I was pleasantly surprised.

Jack Bauer and Vanessa Michael Munroe are Joining Me for the Apocalypse

I’m a big fan of Taylor Stevens and her newest book comes out today. She started several years ago with The Informationist and introduced Vanessa Michael Munroe to the world. Since then I’ve been hooked not only on the character and the story, but on the author as well. Stevens is one of the most personable and friendly best-selling authors I’ve ever had the opportunity to know.

Before I go any further, click HERE and check out her books.

Stevens’ new book got me to thinking, who would I want with me in the apocalypse? For now, I’ll stick with just three names, because each of these names comes with their own team as well. If you want to survive the first 72 hours, and then the first 90 days, and beyond, you’ll need people like this around.

1. Vanessa Michael Munroe- She’s a survivor, no matter what the conditions. Her chameleon-like ability to blend in would help anywhere. She’s deadly and also possesses skills that don’t require any tech whatsoever.

2. Michael Weston of Burn Notice- Michael and his team can figure their way into or out of any situation from the mundane to the hyper-dangerous. Their great at improvisation with whatever’s lying around. They’d also be fun to have around. Just be sure to keep the yogurt and beer stocked.

3. Jack Bauer from 24- Jack is the guy you want in a pinch. Every group needs a heavy hitter prepared to do whatever is necessary to survive. Jack’s that guy. In the show he tends to rely heavily on tech, but I think he’d do okay once tech is gone.

PS…I’m a minimalist, so I don’t keep too many books on my shelf once I read them. Stevens’ books stay right there, right beside my dog-eared copy of Fight Club.

Don’t Poke Fun at Professional Anglers. You May Need Them.

I pulled this from a Bassmasters magazine. In any type of apocalypse, fishing is a skill you’ll want to be good at. Even better, for proper prepping, make friends with a few professional anglers before the big bad happens. They’ll be an integral part of your crew.
